I want to announce two upcoming photo tours of Philadelphia that I will be leading the weekend of April 21st & 22nd.
The first is a tour of Rittenhouse Square on April 21 at 3-6 p.m. Rittenhouse Square is one of the most picturesque and photogenic areas of Philadelphia. This is the perfect photo tour if you are interested photographing Spring flowers, architectural details, people, and cityscapes. I will show you important points of composition and help you discover your personal point of view.
The second tour I will be leading is taking place at the Italian Market on Sunday the 22nd at11:30-2:30 p.m.
The Italian market is a wonderful mix of old and new worlds with its vibrant colors, ethnic store fronts and interesting people. The fruit stands are brimming with reds, yellows, and greens and the possibilities are endless.
During these Photo tours I will help you with the operation of your camera, give you recommendations of subject matter and help you with the compositional elements of your photograph.
To join me and to reserve you space on these two special photo excursions go to the Digital Photo academy website:

Every other week I will be offering one of my original photographs at a great savings to you. The selections will include unmated signed photographs of the various sizes and subjects included in both my websites.
The second title offered through my Print Purchase Program is an unmated medium size photograph titled Blue Moon.
Blue Moon, taken in Biddeford Pool Maine, is an image of one of those rare events; a blue moon, which is the second full moon in the same month. This moon has two other rare features. It is also a harvest moon. And if you look close you will see a red ring around it. I first thought that this was an optical illusion but realized that the red ring is reflected in the water. When the moon is low in the horizon as the ice crystals pick up the sunlight they create a red ring. It’s actually a fairly uncommon happening. So having these three astronomical characteristics in one image was a one of a kind experience. And yes the color is natural. No filters, no photoshop!!
The size: 13″x10.25″ printed on a 11×14′ photographic paper. This size is perfect for matting to fit a 16×20 standard size frame.
Price: $13.00 + $7.00 shipping = $20.00 total. (Tax included)
Take note: there are only 15 prints available

I have eaten at Franco’s and Luigi’s High note cafe at 13th and Tasker. for the last 5 or 6 years and tonight was the last time. I just got back from a a bad experience there.
The problem centered around being some would say misinformed, I would say deceived and disrespected.. To be as brief as possible we ordered one order of roasted red peppers that were delicious, two sides of linguini, just as good, and one side of meatballs. When the food came out, the sides of linguini were so big that I asked the waiter if this was the size of a side of linguini. A few minutes later I asked him again, and how big was an entree. He assured me they were side portions and said that the entree was twice as large. When we got the check we were charged for two entrees. When I brought this up to the owner Franco he said that we couldn’t order sides of anything. when I asked him why the waiter didn’t tell us we were not allowed to order side dishes, Franco looked at me as if I were some dimwit and said with the arrogance of Napoleon, in a room full of people, and I paraphrase ” nobody ever orders side dishes of anything, these are entrees”. So no matter how little or how much you want to eat you can only order enormous portions at fairly high prices. As much as I like the food, I cannot recommend a place that tells you the portion you ordered after you get the bill; and assumes that the customer is wrong. Franco did not take any responsibility for the waiter’s lack of knowledge of the menu and that we were misinformed. So for one appetizer of roasted peppers, two “sides ” of linguini in oil, and one appetizer of meatballs (3) It cost $60.00. The same meal at Pesto’s on South Broad would be $25.00 tops. the food is at least as good, and the owners appreciate and respect their customer.

I am very excited about a new bimonthly Print Purchase Program I am initiating with this posting.
Every other week I will be offering one of my original photographs at a great savings to you. The selections will include unmatted signed photographs of the various sizes and subjects included in both my websites: www.earthlightimages.com www.photographsofphiladelphia.com
The first title offered through my Print Purchase Program is an unmatted medium size photograph titled “Geno’s Steaks”.
“Geno’s Steaks” is an iconic image of one of Philadelphia’s famous landmarks. People come from all over and line up around the block to order Geno’s famous steak “wit wiz” ( translation: Cheese steak). I took this photograph several years ago just before the new signs and neon were installed. I still prefer this classic style. That is what makes this image one to have.

If you ask any tour guide where to get good food in the historic area of Philadelphia most of them will tell you Philly’s Gourmet Cafe, better known as Mimi’s. Mimi is the ever joyous hostess that brings her Asian charm to everyone she greets.
Located at the very front of the 5th street entrance of the Bourse building between Chestnut and Market, Mimi’s offers a wide variety of well-prepared, fresh, cold and hot pay by the lb. buffets and salad bar.
It includes selections of American, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and Mediterranean dishes, as well as fresh and prepared fruits and vegetables that are delicious. I had samples of the Chinese broccoli, BB pork and chicken, roasted chicken, prepared broccoli, and a variety of other prepared fruit and vegetable dishes and every single sample was fresh, crisp and succulent. Other dishes available include pasta Italian style, beef stew, general chow’s chicken as well as succotash, fried plantain, spanakopita (spinach pie) and a selection of gluten free sandwiches using only Boar Head products. And of course, what selection would be complete without the Philly cheese steak. The steak is lean and well prepared. Mimi proudly guarantees that everything is MSG and meat tenderizer free.
Her daily specials include a student group discounts: a cheese steak fries and soda @ $7.99
So when you are visiting the historic area of Philadelphia and are ready for a casual meal, go to Mimi’s. With such a wide selection of deliciously prepared food, at a reasonable price, you can’t do better.

We Philadelphians are so fortunate to have so many natural areas surrounding our fair city.
Some of my favorite day trips are to the parks and gardens in the Philadelphia area. As you may well know there are many world class gardens no more than 40 minutes drive form Center City.
Starting this week I will be adding 1 or 2 images a week to my Photographs of Philadelphia website. The subjects will include florals, Landscapes, abstracts and architecture taken at Longwood Gardens, Chanticleer, Pastoriuos Park, Morris Arboretum, The Philadelphia Zoo, and of course Fairmount Park.
These new photographs from my Parks and Gardens series will soon be available as fine art photographs, posters and note cards; as well as gift items available through my Philadelphia online gift shop.
Now that Spring is just around the corner, it is the perfect time to start planning your excursions to these places of beauty and wonder.

From when I was a child I was taught that If I had nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all. That is why I will be as brief as possible.

I heard Zoe Strauss interviewed on the radio. I was impressed by her articulate descriptions of her work, her relationships with the people and her overall approach to living. I had also seen her work early on. So I went to see her exhibit at PMA and drove around the city to see the billboards.

With all do respect I didn’t get it!! I didn’t get PMA’s interests or the excitement about the work. I saw ordinary snap shots at best, and a contrived manipulation at worst. I tend to go with the first. There was nothing about the work that contained the elements that elevates street photography or any other style to art. I saw no sense of personal nobility, grace or respect in the human condition of the people in the portraits. With several exceptions, I saw no attention to the two dimensional: content without form or composition. Maybe that was the point. But as I said I don’t get it.
